Group assignment 1.4: Go with the flow

Group assignment 1.4: Go with the flow#

You can preview the instructions of this assignment on https://mude.citg.tudelft.nl/workbook-2026/assignments/GA1.4/README.html. After the deadline, this link will include solutions. The preview without solutions will remain available here: https://mude.citg.tudelft.nl/workbook-2026/no_solutions/assignments/GA1.4/README.html. All files of an assignment can be downloaded as .zip-file to your computer.

At 11:30, you’ll have to close laptops and receive a set of questions to be solved as a group. These questions are based on what you did in the first three hours. You can make use of notes written in the first three hours, but you are not allowed to use any other resources like AI. At 12:30, you’ll hand in your handwritten answers to the questions.

Before you can start this assignment, you should have read the theory in the book, completed the Wednesday’s workshop and the programming assignment of this week.

There are four files to be aware of:

  1. README.md

  2. GA_1.4.ipynb

  3. dataset_thames.csv

  4. dataset_class_survey_contingency.csv

With the notebook you will:

  • explore measurements of water depth and discharge;

  • select and fit probability distributions;

  • assess their goodness of fit;

  • propagate uncertainty to flow velocity;

  • investigate an assumption made in that propagation;

  • explore categorical questionnaire data using contingency tables.

The written part asks you to use and interpret the results you obtained during the notebook. Section 8 of the notebook contains a checklist of what should be present in your handwritten reference notes before laptops close.

Many notebook tasks can be divided among group members, but make sure that the whole group comes back together to inspect and discuss the results. The written questions primarily assess your interpretation of the analysis rather than your ability to produce Python code.
